We know many Hollywood studios view Redbox $1 DVD rental kiosks as a problem that must be kept in check. A recent report from the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) says those rental kiosks could represent a billion dollar drain on Hollywood's revenues.

The report, entitled “The Economic Implications of Low-Cost DVD Rentals” (PDF available here) characterizes those red boxes as pockmarks on the face of a sickened home video industry.

LAEDC, which is led by Bill Allen, alum of CBS Television and MTM Productions (you may recall its sweet logo), says that $1 rentals cannibalize DVD sales, lower the perceived value of DVD movies, and cause conflicts with other retail channels.

Based on market records and estimates, LAEDC predicts these three factors will have a snowball effect on the industry. For each billion in home video revenue, the motion picture industry earns $250 million, which translates into $1.5 billion in economic output, according to the group. Therefore, if a billion in revenue is lost, LAEDC predicts catastrophic after-effects, including a loss of 9,280 jobs with earnings totaling $395 million, a decrease of $35.4 million in contributions to health and welfare funds for guild members, and $30 million in lost tax revenue.

“Of the 9,280 jobs, almost half will occur in the Information sector. In addition to motion picture sound and recording industries, this sector includes publishing industries, radio and television broadcasting, telecommunications industries, and Internet service providers,” the study says.

The majority of the 27-page report is report is dedicated to drawing a parallel between $1 DVD rentals and a corresponding decrease in the retail sales of DVDs. But most of the information is speculation based upon what the group admits are “limited” data sets, and calls its estimation “problematic” because “the dynamic feedback between [the rental and retail] markets makes estimation especially difficult.”

Furthermore, it says, “Foregone revenues from low-cost new release DVD rentals may be hard to distinguish from other transformational shifts in the industry, such as…the current recession…digital delivery of content through Internet providers… households opting for other forms of entertainments, such as gaming and social networking.”

Indeed, even in LAEDC's methodology, it says it cannot reliably predict a title's sales and rental balance. For example, the retail cost of a DVD may be cut due to the title's poor box office performance; but the lower cost can actually improve the title's sales beyond expectations, so why couldn't the same be done with rentals? It is conceivable that a cheaper rental price may stand to increase the consumption of a title which otherwise lacked buzz and would have performed poorly.

Even if singularly, a cheap rental draws one more consumer away from a DVD purchase — as LAEDC contests that rentals do — collectively, cheap rentals have drawn more consumers to titles they may have otherwise have avoided.

Redbox told Betanews that it has already proven this to be true. “The recent film Management starring Jennifer Aniston performed better at Redbox than it did at the box office,” the company's representatives told us today. In this case, its kiosks actually served as a growth engine for Hollywood.

The company added, “Redbox promotes Hollywood titles to more than 200 million people that pass by the Redbox locations each week, driving increased awareness and viewership.”

The Hollywood Theater in Dormont has a packed lineup for the next week with wine, Santa Claus, the Three Stooges and a $970 movie shot in Pittsburgh — but obviously not at the same time.

A long list of special events is planned including today's 7 p.m. showing of “Annie Hall” (free wine tasting at 6 p.m.), with a midnight screening of “Shock Treatment,” a spinoff of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

The venue will switch gears Saturday at 11 a.m. for breakfast with Santa and cartoon capers (admission $10) and the first of two Three Stooges Film Festivals at 2 p.m., with a repeat at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children and senior citizens.

“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will erupt at midnight Saturday at the Hollywood, with “The Polar Express” at 2 p.m. Sunday and “It's a Wonderful Life” at 7 p.m.

On Monday at 7:30 p.m., the Hollywood will host the American premiere of “Blanc de Blanc,” a Lucas McNelly film shot with a budget of $970 and edited in two weeks.

The North Shore resident, who made the movie as part of a Twitter #2wkfilm challenge, shot in five days mostly in Shadyside with some location work Downtown. It screened in London earlier this year as part of the Portobello Film Festival.

“Blanc de Blanc” is about a woman who falls in love with a man she meets on the street and the resulting ripple effect. Jason Kirsch, McNelly and Rachel Shaw wrote it, and the film stars Kirsch, Shaw, Trent Wolfred, Dan Stiker and Joshua Justice Thomas.

McNelly's previous film, “Gravida,” played in festivals around the world. Admission for Monday's showing is $7.

The Hollywood also will show “Endgame” Tuesday and Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. It's a political thriller in which a businessman initiates covert discussions between the African National Congress and white intellectuals to try to find a peaceful solution to the Apartheid regime. William Hurt, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jonny Lee Miller lead the cast. (Barbara Vancheri, PG movie editor)

Now you don't need a portable DVD player to watch a DVD you've just bought — all you need is a computer and a high-speed Internet connection. Amazon.com has introduced Disc+ On Demand, a new program that enables purchasers of select DVDs and Blu-ray discs to watch the movie instantly through the company's on demand service. As reported by NewTeeVee, “only a tiny fraction of all DVDs available on Amazon seem to be part of the promotion.” Right now, 300 or so titles are available, while the site offers more than 330,000 DVDs for sale. The caveats are notable: the movie can either be streamed or downloaded to a PC or TiVo, but only in standard definition, and the promotion itself is only for a limited time, though NewTeeVee thinks Amazon is “clearly just dipping a toe in the water” in the hope of boosting slumping DVD sales.

As it happens, the announcement comes on the heels of a provocative article by Cory Doctorow in The Guardian UK that declares: “Streaming will never replace downloading.” Doctorow specifically addresses the streaming and downloading of music, but the principles surely apply to movies as well: “There's no reason to believe that people will lose the urge to collect music.” Storing movies on physical media may well go the way of the dinosaurs, but that “urge to collect” will remain.

Does the platform combo that Amazon.com is testing out have any appeal to you? What other platform combos would you be tempted to buy or use?
In a move that could help counter the instant gratification valley that currently separates online shopping from heading to the local retailer, Amazon is pushing a “limited time offer” called Disc+ On Demand that pairs 300 or so of its movies with a free Amazon VOD copy. That digital version pops into the buyer's Video Library instantly after purchase and still has to play by all the usual video on-demand rules of 24 hr / 30 day windows, U.S. address, and is currently only available in standard-definition. Still, this combination of the digital and physical purchase worlds means the online giant has beaten Best Buy's similar plans to the punch and approaches the convenience of Netflix's Watch Instantly. Just its usually lower prices has already driven many of you to be come online only disc buyers, we'll see if this helps Amazon grab the rest.

HD Guru® obtained an advanced copy of Best Buy’s weekly circular (12/6/09-12/12/09).  It features a number of HDTV bundles consisting of select Sony HDTVs, a Playstation 3 (PS 3), a PS 3 game and a Blu-ray movie disc. You select  from three game and movie disc titles (listed below). Best Buy (BB) claims a savings from $789-$1100 for the bundle. However, this is not accurate. Six of the twelve package deal TVs never sold for the “regular” price listed by BB.

Below are the twelve PS3/TV packages along with the actual current Best Buy HDTV price. Regardless of the misleading savings, a number of the packages are sweet deals.

HD Guru recommends you compare the price of the Sony HDTVs with Amazon listings to determine if it’s really a good deal.

Experience tells us, Amazon dealers often their lower  prices after Best Buy’s weekly ad appears .  We included Amazon links to each of the  Sony HDTVs for easy price comparison.

The PS3 games in the ad are “Uncharted”, “Little Big Planet” and “Ratchet Clank Future”. The Blu-ray titles are “Taking of Pelham 123″, “The Ugly Truth”, “Year One”.

Camelbuy.com supplied Best Buy price history information.

The atrocity known as the Spike Video Game Awards (VGAs) is happening this weekend and I won’t be watching. Its a joke and in my opinion nothing but a 2 hour long string of commercials, ridiculous skits that aren’t in the least bit funny, and scantily clad models who fumble over lines. They show 10-30 second video teasers for games most of us already know are coming out and bombard us with actors who apparently know everything about video games because they did a voice over for a character or played 15 minutes of a game at a press event.

This year they are claiming that the voters will be the ones making the call on who takes home whatever god awful trophy they design this time around. So I have made a list of my votes for each category and today I share with you my picks for the first nine awards as listed on the official Spike VGA site.

Game of the Year
Nominees: Assassin’s Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, COD: Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Uncharted 2

My Pick: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Most likely to win: COD: Modern Warfare 2

In a list of sequels, Batman stands out as an original concept. Sure, I enjoyed AC2 and L4D2, but the improvements in game-play from their predecessors don’t stand out enough to make them a Game of the Year. The voice acting was amazing, the score and graphics beautiful. It was original, and in this age of gaming, original should stand for something. But, money dictates where the votes will end up, which means that Modern Warfare 2 will take home the honour, based on the combination of public votes and how MW2 made sales records. I am not anti-MW2. I do eventually want to give the game a go, but I didn’t see it being as ground breaking as the original title.

Studio of the Year
Nominees: Infinity Ward, Naughty Dog, Rocksteady, Valve

My Pick: Rocksteady
Most likely to win: Infinity Ward

For the same reasons as my Game of the Year pick, Rocksteady brought something new to the table, while the other studios brought follow-ups.

Best Independent Game
Nominees: ‘Spolsion Man, flOwer, Osmos, Trials HD

My Pick: flOwer
Most likely to win: n/a

Seeing as I only played flOwer and ‘Spolsion Man, I could only make my choice between the two. I much preferred flOwer. The motion controls, sound and overall calming nature of the game proved to be a unique experience, one that I still believe all gamers need to have. ‘Spolsion Man just cannot hold a candle to that, in my humble opinion.

Best Xbox 360 Game
Nominees: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Halo 3: ODST, Forza Motorsport 3, Left 4 Dead 2

My Pick: n/a
Most likely to win: Halo 3: ODST

I have played 3 of the 4 games in this category, and I cannot pick a winner. Three of these are sequels and the other is a multiplatform title. I believe that if you are going to have an annual awards program for games that multiplatform games are in their own category. Halo 3: ODST will most likely win this category as it did have strong launch day numbers. Forza 3 has sold well over the course of the one month its been on the market, but I personally don’t think its a 360 Game of the Year contender.

Best PS3 Game
Nominees: inFAMOUS, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: Crack in Time, Uncharted 2

My Pick: n/a
Most likely to win: Uncharted 2

I have not played any of these titles on the PS3, even though I do want to try out Ratchet & Clank and eventually play the first Uncharted title. My guess that Uncharted 2 will take this category is based on speaking to people who have also played either inFAMOUS or Killzone 2.

Best Wii Game
Nominees: Mad World, New Super Mario Bros, Punch Out, Wii Sports Resort

My Pick: n/a
Most likely to win: Nintendo

I guess when 60% of the titles out on the system are fitness games and you are making a show targeted towards a male audience, you aren’t going to select any of those for Best Wii Game. Granted those games are just a more interactive version of a workout DVD. Take out all the shovelware that makes up another 25% of the Wii library, you have to pick from the remaining 15% which would be seen as the highlight titles. But why the hell is Wii Sports Resort in there and Muramasa isn’t? No matter how I look at it, it doesn’t seem likely that Mad World will win, which means the remaining titles are all Nintendo first party software. My guess is a toss up between Punch Out which I know a lot of people did enjoy and New Super Mario Bros, a game I really want to play for the nostalgia factor but I heard was not as much fun as first expected.

Best PC Games
Nominees: Dragon Age: Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Plants vs Zombies, Sims 3

My Pick: Plants vs Zombies
Most likely to win: Sims 3

PvZ! PvZ! I cannot deny my love of Plants vs Zombies. I have obtained the Golden Sunflower award, my Tree of Wisdom is over 100 feet tall and I constantly find myself drawn to play it even when I have a stack of new games waiting for me to touch. But since this is considered more of a casual game, the hardcore PC gamers who will actually place votes are more likely to go for L4D2 or Sims 3, and I believe Sims 3 will manage to pull of more votes.

Best Handheld Game
Nominees: GTA: Chinatown Wars, Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Prof. Layton & the Diabolical Box, Scribblenauts

My Pick: Prof. Layton & the Diabolical Box
Most likely to win: Scribblenauts

Here is where I look like a hypocrite for saying that I think an original game should win. But Diabolical Box is a sequel!! *le gasp* So why do I think it should win over Scribblenauts? While I do still intend on one day trying out Scribblenauts, the game’s original concept was hampered by the fact that it was too easy to play through. Granted most people who found it too easy could technically be called cheaters, shouldn’t the creators of the game foreseen that some people would find a loophole that allowed them to use the same words over and over again? It does boast an impressive library of words for gamers to play with. And if you were lucky enough, you even got a rockin’ rooster hat. My pick goes to Diabolical Box for creating a brand new storyline, bringing new puzzles and once again proving that the DS cartridge is a powerful little guy. The amount of cutscenes and voice overs Level-5 manages to fit still amaze me. Plus, it was the first handheld game in a long while that had me completely absorbed in it from the moment I peeled off the plastic until I found the last tea recipe.

Best Shooter Game
Nominees: COD: Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Left 4 Dead 2

My Pick: Left 4 Dead 2
Most likely to win: COD: Modern Warfare 2

Simply put, of the four shooters listed the only one I felt compelled to purchase on launch was Left 4 Dead 2. I think its because no matter what, I knew that playing alone or in a group I would have the most fun killing zombies by either shooting or beating them to death with a baseball bat. My feeling that the Best Shooter title ends up with MW2 is that the millions of gamers who purchased it across all platforms will band together for this one.

In Part 2, I will look at Best Fighter, Action/Adventure, RPG, Multiplayer, Individual Sport, Team Sport, Driving, Music Games as well as Best Soundtrack.
